Because they have been captured for sale as pets in nearby cities and than their habitat has been almost completely developed for plantations and housing. Their silky and pretty skin is worth $20.000 at the black market. (The scientists have determined that a population of 2,000 tamarins living in the wild in 25,000 hectares of protected and connected forest is needed).
